Three Secrets to Finding the Right Attorney for You
After dealing with several attorneys, you come to the realization that some attorneys are easier to work with than others. That's not to say that this attorneys style is "right" and anothers is wrong, they're just different. So here's some things to consider when choosing an attorney to work with.
First, find out what their preferred methods of communication are. For me, I prefer an attorney I can converse with over email. I spend a lot of time at my PC and it's the fastest, easiest method for me.
I used to have an attorney that never emailed. He was older and his secretary handled all the tech stuff, but they really didn't have a good system for it. Sometimes when I'd email him, I'd have to call him a week later and check up on the matter by phone because he hadn't "gotten around" to his emails yet. This was very frustrating for me, and I finally left him. Whetever method of communication works best for you, your attorney should be able to work with.
Second, make sure your attorney specializes in the area your going to be needing the most help with. Because I'm in business, I look for a good contract attorney, and try to find one that's good with financial matters as well. If you're primarily going to be needing personal, or criminal legal advice, make sure you've got an attorney who specializes in those matters. At the very least there should be someone in the firm that handles them. Otherwise you may not be getting the best advice for your situation, and that can cost you more in the long run because you will have paid for advice that cost you.
Lastly, interview your prospective attorney before you bring him on. Find out what kind of person he is, what kind of work he prefers to do, what his areas of expertise or specialty are. If you're going to get the cold shoulder from him because he hates working on the kind of matters you're bringing to him, it's best to find out up front. Ideally, you'll not only hit it off well personally and like each other, but he'll be passionate about the legal matters you're bringing to his firm as well. That can make all the difference in the kind of legal help you get. |
